This laboratory is designed
to supplement the lecture course in Human Anatomy and Physiology (BIO237). The concepts covered in the lecture
course are explored in greater detail using a variety of tools such as models,
microscope slides and computer animations.
Texts (required): Marieb, E.N.
2004. Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory Manual, 7th edition. Addison/Wesley Pub. Co.
Texts (optional): Lafferty,
ADAM Anatomy CD with Student Lab Guide. 1st edition. Benjamin Cummings Pub. Co.
Van De Graaff. Photo Atlas for A&P. 4th edition. Morton Pub. Co.
Upon
completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Use anatomical terminology correctly
2. Identify the anatomical components of the skeletal,
muscular, and nervous systems on models and cadavers and describe their
functional characteristics.
3. Identify and describe the functional characteristics
and locations of the tissues of the human body.
4. Identify the components of the integumentary system
using a microscope and describe their functions.
5. Identify the bones of the skeleton as well as identify
specific structures of each bone.
6. Identify and classify joints and joint structures.
7. Critically discuss the physiological processes of the
muscular system.
8. Identify specific muscles and learn their origins,
insertions and actions.
9. Identify parts of a neuron, organization and parts of
the human brain and spinal cord, and identify peripheral nerves
10. Identify structures of the organs of special senses.

Lab Notebooks
BIO247L
Lab notebooks are to be kept for this course and should be structured
as follows:
1.
Use a loose-leaf
notebook, approximately 1.5” – 2” thick.
2.
Keep separate sections
for your syllabus, your quizzes and exams and finally, weekly sections which
should include your handouts, your handwritten notes and your homework
exercises that are due that week (i.e.Homework assigned during week 1 is due on
week 2, so that’s where it should appear.)
3.
I will check your
notebooks before you leave at the end of the class to ensure that you have
completed the work for that week.
Your weekly handout has a spot for my initials which I will sign at the
end of class.
4.
Leaving before your
notebook has been checked and initialed by me will result in a 1-point
penalty.
5.
An incomplete notebook
for a particular week will also result in a one-point penalty.
6.
Your lab notebook
accounts for 10% of your final grade, so the work put into it is
significant. The difference
between an A and a B may lie with how well your notebook is done!
